Traffic Law 2025: What Malaysian Drivers Must Know

As we navigate through 2025, it’s crucial for Malaysian drivers to stay informed about the latest traffic law updates. These changes aim to enhance road safety and ensure responsible driving across the nation.

Mandatory ABS for Motorcycles

Starting 1st January 2025, all motorcycles with an engine capacity of 150cc and above are required to be equipped with Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS). This initiative addresses the alarming statistic that motorcyclists accounted for 65% of road fatalities last year. According to the World Health Organization, ABS can reduce fatal motorcycle accidents by 31%. Riders of older bikes without ABS should consider upgrading to comply with this regulation and enhance their safety on the road.

Stricter Penalties for Illegal Street Racing

The Malaysia government has amended the Road Transport Act 1987 to impose harsher penalties on individuals involved in illegal street racing, commonly referred to as ‘Mat Rempit’ activities. These amendments aim to deter reckless behavior and promote safer driving practices. Both participants and those who facilitate such races will face increased fines and longer imprisonment terms upon conviction.

Enhanced Penalties for Drug-Impaired Driving

Effective October 2025, driving under the influence of drugs will incur penalties similar to those for drunk driving. Amendments to Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987 reflect the government’s zero-tolerance stance on impaired driving. Offenders can expect substantial fines, license suspension, and possible imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offense.

Staying informed about these traffic law updates is essential for all Malaysian drivers. Adhering to these regulations not only ensures compliance but also contributes to safer roads for everyone.
